Tyler ISD Board of Trustees Approves Learning Environment Standards
The Board of Trustees showed support of the initiatives of new Tyler ISD administrators by approving a proposal by district officials to implement Tyler ISD Campus Learning Environment Standards and Tyler ISD Learning Environment Standards for Students.
“The standards are aimed at enabling the district to become a premier district in the State of Texas. In order to do that we will assess each school in TISD on the basis of student success, positive climate, parental involvement, clear communication, and respect for diversity,” said Dr. Roland Hernandez, Deputy Superintendent of Schools.
The Campus Learning Environment Standards include among other items improving performance on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test, maintaining a minimum of 98% attendance rate, decreasing discipline referrals in the district by 25% and increasing PTA involvement by 20% across the district.
“We feel confident that by implementing and maintaining accountability we can reach the goals we have set forth within the standards,” said Dr. Karen Raney, Director of Secondary Education.
The Learning Environment Standards for Students, focuses on the standards that students within Tyler ISD will be expected to demonstrate. These include: responsibility, safety and order, active learning, citizenship, and respect. The district plans to focus on consistent district-wide implementation of the Student Code of Conduct and Campus Discipline Plan to help aid in areas such as respect and safety and order.
“There is no negotiation when it comes to these standards. We will communicate both the Campus and Student Learning Environment Standards to every principal and teacher and will assess the implementation of these standards over time to ensure they are being enforced. The ultimate goal of the plan is to make certain that we are providing educational environments that are as conducive to learning as possible,” said Dr. Hernandez. “This is a research-based program that we are confident will make a positive academic and social impact on students.”
