2023 - 2024 Grants for Great Ideas
Grants for Great Ideas are awarded to educators for innovative ideas that support student achievement and classroom enrichment. They can be awarded to the district, a campus, or an individual or team of educators.
Through the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and community, the Tyler ISD Foundation was able to award nearly $80,000 in Grants for Great Ideas this year. A total of 26 grants were awarded on 16 campuses, and will impact 7,500 students!
Drawing to Digitize - $4,500
Megan McDaniel & Joshua Currie - Austin Elementary School
Drawing to Digitize introduces students to the world of digital art, providing drawing tablets for hands-on creativity and covering elements of art, design principles, and 3D aspects. These skills can lay the foundation for potential careers in the arts and technology world!
STEAMing for Success: Advancing Creativity & Innovation Phase I (3rd-Grade) - $3,200
Joshua Currie, Maria Riggs & Xitlalia Sanchez - Austin Elementary School
Students will learn through a dynamic, innovative, and engaging learning environment with seven sessions where they will solve real-world problems with things like wheels to navigate Mars, weather stations, and geology stations. Learning will also integrate math, reading, writing, and social studies to give students a real-world view from all perspectives.
Giving Students a Voice Through Journalism 2.0 - $4,302
Alejandra Grijalva & Maite Martinez - Birdwell Dual Language Immersion School
What started as a club is now an elective, and the grant will expand the class with all new cameras, tripods, and more to create announcements and monthly newsletters, aid in yearbook creation, and amplify school stories, fostering creativity, critical thinking, and digital literacy.
Spelling Engagement Project - $560
Elandra Carston - Bonner Elementary School
This grant will allow for two or more contests per year where students will dive into friendly spelling contests, forming teams with varied reading levels to become lovers of reading.
Hive Productions - $3,100
Shanda Warren, Isabel Garcia & Melissa Dene - Boshears Center for Exceptional Programs
Hive Productions elevates visual and performing arts opportunities, expanding their wheelchair dance productions and introducing audio/video technology. Students can create unique multimedia content with a mobile studio, supporting the school’s mission to build community and empower individuality.
Sensory Obstacles and Improvements for Therapeutic Horsemanship Programming - $906
Katherine Anne Scott & Larhonda Hunter - Boshears Center for Exceptional Programs
Sensory Obstacles & Improvements aims to create engaging horseback riding services with trails and activities for students with significant medical, physical, and/or cognitive special needs to boost physical and cognitive growth. There will be trail obstacles and sensory items like painted ground poles, a noodle curtain for kids to walk through, a Ring Toss game, and more. These obstacles help students improve balance, hand-eye coordination, core strength, attention, memory, emotional well-being, and executive functioning.
Get Jazz Shoes - $1,000
Jennifer Davis - Boulter Middle School
Project Get Jazz Shoes brings students in dance class the same level of dance training as in a dance studio with new jazz shoes that are standard in the industry.
Teaching English Language Learners - $2,500

This grant bridges the gap for non-English speaking students, providing earbuds for real-time translation and fostering a diverse and inclusive educational experience!
Amplifying Literacy: Audiobooks for Middle School Readers - $5,000
Jolain Lamott, Tia Johnson & Madeline Dubose - Caldwell Arts Academy
Amplifying Literacy expands the school’s audiobook collection, currently limited to grade 3-5 reading levels, to a collection with middle school reading levels. This caters to various literary preferences and support for all students, including second-language learners and struggling readers.
Classroom Metamorphosis - $4,678

Classrooms will transform into engaging journeys to help students achieve their highest potential. An example is having students travel around the world to different countries, stamping passports along the way to reinforce topics, or a Mission Possible STAAR Review, reviewing the content they learned throughout the year.
Night at the Campus Museum - $4,726

Night at the Campus Museum turns Caldwell’s school projects and art into captivating exhibits, integrating arts, core content, and cultural displays. The project could include hosting field trips from other schools to experience their creations.
Student Market Place - $1,720

The Student Market Place grant will provide updated display units for diverse studio arts, from event posters to delicate jewelry, allowing additional gallery space, wider art options, and more robust public displays.
Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics - $4,500
Kyle Stoltz & Shannon Kinkade - Early College High School
Building Thinking Classrooms promotes group collaboration, standing workspaces, and whiteboard problem-solving to enhance mathematical thinking through the use of free-standing whiteboards for an interactive learning experience!
Crochet Learning Program for 5th Grade Students - $2,190

Students will weave together academic lessons/skills and foster social-emotional learning through the art of crochet.
Project Podcast - $2,972
Susan McElroy, Amanda Harper, Jonathan Cox & Gary Simms - Hubbard Middle School
Project Podcast allows students to create instructional sound recordings, enhancing their learning through real-life experiences. These recordings serve as assessments and scientific experiments and enable students to conduct interviews, cover current events, and more.
Box Cars & One-Eyed Jacks - $3,846

Box Cars & One-Eyed Jacks introduces engaging manipulatives to help students understand and retain math concepts using physical objects, driving hands-on learning for a solid foundation!
Exploring Science Kits Aligned to 2nd Grade Curriculum - $456

Exploring Science Kits will increase engagement in the science curriculum with multiple kits like Mysterious Matter, Energy Sticks, STEM Force and Motion, ReGrow, Sun-Earth-Moon Model, and Life Cycles Toys.
Literacy Told Through Secret Stories - $1,650

Secret Stories enhances printed word recognition in early reading. Engaging stories, sound posters, and phonics songs supplement teaching, aiding the whole group, a small group, and homework sessions. A great way to boost academic growth and success!
Project Fine Arts Revival (3 part project) - $11,085

Project Fine Arts Revival is a three-part grant for Ramey Elementary that brings safe LED stage lighting to the school’s cafetorium, introduces a top-notch sound system for performances, and finally adds a stage projector for immersive experiences.
Thirst for Knowledge: Improving Performance through Hydration - $3,348

Thirst for Knowledge brings two new water bottle filling stations to Ramey Elementary, promoting healthy habits and ensuring students have the refreshing fuel they need to thrive in their academic journey!
Classroom Transformation Stations - $5,000

It transforms classrooms into engaging spaces! Classroom Transformation Stations empower teachers with 15 kits to create temporary immersive, theme-based learning experiences for all grades, boosting engagement through hands-on and sensory learning.
FBLA I'm Possible: Tools for Success - $262

FBLA I’m Possible: Tools for Success covers the cost of conducting a hands-on leadership retreat in January 2024 with a leadership expert to train the officers in leading FBLA.
In Biology...We Like to Move It! - $438

In Biology...We Like to Move It! transforms biology class with hand-made models, manipulatives, toys, and games to make learning fun, motivating, and engaging. Activities and tasks target vocabulary building and concepts for each unit.
UnlockEd: Unlocking Engagement in the Classroom - $643
Amber Barnard - Tyler Legacy High School
RAID Boxes are physical, hands-on boxes with locks, and teachers can create various engaging activities for students to “break into” them. The RAID Boxes are designed with four key elements in mind: RTI, Assess, Instruct, Differentiate.
The Drone Rangers - $5,000
Christine Morton-Stepp & James Horner - Tyler Legacy High School
The Drone Rangers grant empowers ROTC students to explore the Principles of IT, AV Production, and drone technology. With ten drones and a curriculum for 20 students, they'll learn coding, flight control, video production, and participating in TryDrones competitions.
Making Math Come Alive with Manipulatives - $2,409

Making Math Come Alive with Manipulatives aims to enhance kindergarten math learning using engaging tools like Box Cars and One-Eyed Jacks. These manipulatives build a strong foundation, promoting critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The Tyler ISD Foundation provides resources to inspire learning, enrich teaching, and enhance opportunities for Tyler ISD students through the support of exemplary programs.
Purpose
The Tyler ISD Foundation is an independent non-profit corporation promoting quality education in the Tyler ISD. The Tyler ISD Foundation was created by the community in 1990 to provide additional support for Tyler teachers, students, staff, administrators, and family members associated with the public school system in Tyler. The work of the Foundation is simple: seek funds to grant those funds in meaningful and impactful ways within Tyler ISD.
