
2024 - 2025 Grants for Great Ideas
Grants for Great Ideas are awarded to educators for innovative ideas that support student achievement and classroom enrichment. They can be awarded to the district, a campus, or an individual or team of educators.
Through the generosity of our donors, sponsors, and community, the Tyler ISD Foundation was able to award $100,000 in Grants for Great Ideas this year. A total of 35 grants were awarded on 16 campuses, as well as the Transportation department, and will impact 13,271 students!




Box Cars and One-Eyed Jacks - $2,900
Belinda Topete, Silvia Vazquez & Katie Jones - Bell Elementary School
This project will introduce math manipulatives into the elementary school curriculum to provide students with an engaging and interactive learning experience. These hands-on math manipulatives from the Box Cars and One-Eyed Jacks program will foster a deep understanding of mathematical concepts for long-term retention of mathematical knowledge and skills.


Let There be Light- $900
Melissa Breuer, La Toiya Thomas & Principal Tamara Johnson - Bell Elementary School
Let There Be Light aims to create hands on, sensory activities that revolve around color and light! These materials and activities are meant for students with special needs and to enhance the way that these students view the world-- as they experience activities through their senses. Different colors and light are often very appealing to students who are neurodiverse and light seems to intrigue and stimulate those senses, allowing students to integrate cognitive, fine motor, and social skills in a fun, engaging way.


Terrific Traveling Thematic Tubs - $4,955

Named Partner: Capital One
Terrific Traveling Thematic Tubs will be used to transform each classroom into an immersive, thematic, engaging space for learning. There will be targeted tubs that integrate ELA, Math, Science and Social Studies into classroom transformations that will impact student engagement. The tubs will be checked out by teachers to be used in their classrooms. Building a thematic approach will lead to an engaging fun experience that will ultimately increase student motivation and therefore make connections to increase achievement.


Spell It Like You Mean It - $600

Named Partner: Dr. Scott and Courtney Burlison
This student-centered project is a great tool to enhance the desire of our readers to become lovers of reading.
Students will compete against peers in an organized spelling contest (at least two per year). Students will be given an overview of possible words and class review of phonetic skills.
Teams will be formed to include a mixture of on, below, and above grade level readers.

Labs Are Not Just for Science - $1,300

Named Partner: Dr. Gary and Lisa Gross
This project will provide a hands on math lab for teachers and students to use on campus. The lab will house different stations, games and manipulatives for students to have hands on math experiences. Teachers will be able to plan and use the resources in the lab to provide meaningful and engaging lessons and intervention time. The lab will have a place for students to work together to have math conversation and discourse. The lab will also have a place for teachers to pull small groups and provide scaffolding and intervention. There will be TEK specific activities that students can pull based up on their needs that are identified through assessment. The math lab will provide an interactive place to practice math skills for all students on campus Pre Kindergarten through fifth.


Bringing Spanish to Life Through Board Games - $800
Eva Salas Nuez - Birdwell Dual Language Immersion School
The project will create a bank of board games that will be tailored to a different proficiency level of Spanish class (beginner, intermediate, advanced).
Students will use these board games to work on their Spanish through the themed board game connected to the contents and goals of the different Spanish modules in their class period.


Tejas is Caddo for Friend - $750
Michelle Norrid, Dejya Dewberry, Karla Moran, Maria Sanchez - Bonner Elementary School
This project will involve four 4th-grade classrooms working collaboratively to explore the rich history and culture of the Caddo tribe and early settler life in East Texas. By participating in hands-on learning experiences, students will develop a meaningful connection to their local heritage and influences. The project will include classroom explorations, virtual field trips, vivid and engaging learning materials, listening to guest speakers from community experts and will culminate in a field trip to the Caddo Mounds State Historic Sites in Alto and Nacogdoches, Texas.


The Hopeful Hive: Sensory Room - $3,500
Elizabeth Gomez, Lorrie Erwin & Ines Everett - Bonner Elementary School
Named Partner: Capital One
The Hopeful Hive is an existing campus-based program designed to support our most at-risk students by providing them with critical personal development skills and emotional support. This grant will sustain and expand the program, including the addition of a sensory room where students can go when they are overwhelmed and unable to express their emotions verbally. The sensory room would include tools and activities designed to help students self-regulate, offering a vital support mechanism during moments of heightened stress.


Oral Language Lab - $5,000
Valerie Reneau, Emily Turner, Kaily Bull, & Laura Gimenez - Bonner Elementary School
Named Partner: TC Energy
This project is a designated classroom to promote growth in language for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students. The language lab provides tools for teachers to develop their students’ language through the use of various centers throughout the classroom. The workstations will be themed and enhance students' knowledge on a myriad of subjects. Students will practice writing, drawing, critical thinking, and comprehension skills. Also, teachers will read and reenact books to bring each one to life.


Empowering Independence: Daily Living Skills for Life - $3,330
Fiona Thurmond, Jessica Dene, Sarah Kolac & Director Brooke Parker - Boshears Center for Exceptional Programs
Named Partner: AS GENECOV Foundation
This grant will purchase modern/adapted kitchen appliances, board games to increase social skills opportunities, and daily living accessible items for activities including folding, hanging, and putting on clothing that would otherwise hinder students with physical and intellectual disabilities. This project will teach students with special needs how to prepare meals and perform kitchen tasks, fostering independence and self-sufficiency at home.


LevelUp Legends - Project Esports - $2,500
Cory Whyte, Maggie Vestal-Cook & Principal Justin Simmons - Boulter Middle School
This project aims to establish a comprehensive Esports club designed to engage middle school students in a modern, inclusive extracurricular activity that fosters academic, social, and emotional growth. The Esports club will provide a structured environment for students to collaborate, compete, and learn through gaming, while building essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication, and digital literacy.


Lunch Bunch Literacy: Building Skills and Confidence for Dyslexic Students - $980
Lauren DePalermo - Caldwell Arts Academy
This program aims to support dyslexic students by providing an engaging, skill-focused environment where they can practice reading and literacy skills learned in the classroom. This initiative creates a welcoming, small-group setting during lunch, allowing students to interact with peers, receive targeted support, and develop reading proficiency using carefully selected, ability-appropriate books. These books are designed to be both educational and enjoyable for older students who struggle with reading, ensuring that the content is age-appropriate, engaging, and confidence-building.


Think Tank! - $5,000
Tracy Fumo, Principal Bobby Markle & Charlotte Allen - Caldwell Arts Academy
Named Partner: TC Energy
The campus is transforming math classrooms into spaces emphasizing rigorous thinking, inspired by Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by Peter Liljedahl. The book outlines 14 strategies that help students shift from simply doing math to thinking like mathematicians. A key strategy is using vertical (wall-mounted) whiteboards, which create a dynamic environment where students’ problem-solving processes are visible to everyone.


Enhancing Student Well-Being: Classroom Calm Down Tool Kits - $5,000

To combat mental health challenges faced by students, Classroom Calm Down Tool Kits will be placed in every classroom. These tool kits will provide students with effective strategies for self-regulation, helping them manage their emotions and reduce classroom disruptions. By fostering a supportive learning environment, we aim to improve academic performance, enhance student well-being, and increase time spent in class.


Classroom Transformation-Kindergarten Reader's Theater - $2,000
Maria Guadalupe Rodriguez Martinez, Hali Clough, Jennifer Foster, Stacy King, Angel Weatherston, Principal Kimberly Simmons, Nadia de la Cruz, DeMario Miller - Dixie Elementary School
The project will implement an engaging reader's theater program in five kindergarten classrooms that will ultimately promote literacy development. The theaters will include a puppet area, reading corner, and writing station.


Building a Thinking Classroom in Middle School Mathematics - $5,000

The purpose of this initiative is to create a learner-centered classroom which will enhance student engagement and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. By incorporating vertical workspaces, students will move away from traditional desk-centered learning, and instead will participate in dynamic, problem-solving exercises that encourage movement and collaboration.

Classroom transformations are immersive learning experiences that modify the physical environment of a classroom where students can engage with the curriculum in a hands-on, interactive way.


Action Based Learning Math Bundle - $2,290
Ch'Tory Buckner, Principal Nicole Robinson & Jade Perry - Jones Elementary School
Overview: The Action Based Learning Math Bundle is a movement-based learning tool to boost student achievement, increase their physical activity levels, and improve their confidence in math competency.
The collaborative math activities will allow students to work along with their parents. The math bundle will also be a resource for classroom teachers to check-out and use for innovative and interactive learning during their math and intervention blocks.


Math Stackers - $350
Ch'Tory Buckner - Jones Elementary School
Math Stackers® puts the power of math in students’ hands and builds them up to be math thinkers! Each aspect of Math Stackers®’ intuitive foam blocks and magnets have been purposefully designed to maximize kids’ discovery and interaction with math through stacking, comparing, questioning and proving their own ideas and theories. Math Stackers® encourages learners to take risks and explore math concepts without fear of failure.


Arduino - $5,000

Arduinos can transform a classroom by providing hands-on learning experiences that enhance engagement in STEM subjects. These versatile microcontrollers enable students to create interactive projects, such as robots and automated systems, fostering creativity and problem-solving skills. By learning to program Arduinos, students gain practical coding experience while seeing their work come to life, making abstract concepts more tangible.


From Scribbles to Sentences: Empowering First Graders Through a Daily Writing Routine - $300

Grade one, ELL, and Special Ed students will benefit from the lessons and methodology of this resource. In an engaging, fast-paced ten minutes a day, students learn how sentences are constructed, recognize the parts of simple sentences, while reinforcing the basic characteristics of text. Included in this resource: a week-at-a-glance, day-by-day teacher guide, sentence-building word cards for each week, and related student pages to inspire creative thinking.


Wonderbooks: Stories That Speak - $3,700
Victoria Dennie & Ashley Bush - Owens Elementary School
This grant will provide the library with 61 Wonderbooks—innovative, read-aloud audiobooks that bring stories to life for young readers. This interactive approach not only makes reading more engaging but also supports critical literacy skills like vocabulary development, phonics, and comprehension. By adding both fiction and nonfiction Wonderbooks to our library collection, we aim to create a more inclusive, interactive, and enriching learning environment that supports literacy growth for all children, including our struggling readers, students with learning disabilities, second-language learners, and special education students.


Melodies In Motion: Expanding Hands-On Music Learning - $4,900

This grant will enhance the elementary music program by incorporating high-quality xylophones and glockenspiels into the classroom. These instruments will provide students with hands-on learning opportunities to explore melody, harmony, rhythm, and musical expression. By acquiring these pitched percussion instruments, we aim to create an engaging, well-rounded music curriculum that promotes creativity, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for music. This will help ensure that more students have access to instruments during music lessons and will make the music classroom a more dynamic space where students can perform, compose, and collaborate with their pee


Igniting Critical Thinking: Building Collaborative Classrooms - $4,390

CodeCombat: Empowering Learning through Coding - $1,000
Steven Dave Santoyo - Peete Elementary School
This project aims to engage 4th and 5th graders in coding while reinforcing their math and reading skills. CodeCombat, an interactive coding platform, students will learn foundational coding concepts such as Python and JavaScript while enhancing their reading skills and math problem-solving abilities. This approach fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity in a hands-on learning environment.


New Math? It's Number Sense over Memorization with Math Stackers K- 5th Grade - $2,230

The "Math Stackers" kit provides a powerful solution to solidify Number Sense. Parents often refer to this as the "New Math" because traditional approaches focused solely on memorizing steps not knowing why they exist. Math Stackers offers a hands-on learning system to teach Math concepts in a variety of settings


Classroom Transformation Kits - $4,450

Building on the success of our first year, this grant will enable us to expand and enhance our thematic transformation kits by further enriching the educational experiences of our students and empowering our educators. In the first year of implementation, the Classroom Transformation Stations project has demonstrated remarkable results. By providing over 30 teachers with thematic kits, we transformed classrooms into immersive learning environments that significantly engaged students. Notably, student performance in the areas of math, reading, writing, science, and social studies have seen an improvement.

Refrigerator For Life Skills - $1,000

The Life Skills classroom is a specialized learning environment designed to help students with special needs develop practical, everyday skills that foster independence and prepare them for successful futures. In this classroom, students engage in activities that focus on self-care, home management, communication, and employment readiness. These lessons empower our students to lead more independent lives by providing them with the tools they need to navigate daily tasks confidently. A refrigerator plays a critical role in providing our students with hands-on learning opportunities that teach essential independent living and workplace readiness skills.


STEAM Week '25 - $1,920

We will launch a collaborative "STEAM Week" on campus following the spring standardized testing period. This initiative aims to engage students in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics through a series of interactive activities led by various departments. By showcasing diverse career pathways in these fields, we hope to inspire students.


Culinary Arts Improvements - $5,000
Johnathan Cakley, Alicia Trahan & Christi Morton-Stepp - Tyler Legacy High School
Named Partner: Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott LLP
This grant aims to enhance culinary education for students by providing access to cooking instruction and increased equipment access. Activities focus on observing and executing hands-on experiences with modern cooking techniques. With the purchase of the overhead demonstration mirror, students will be able to observe demonstrations while collecting the notes and knowledge before practicing. Additionally, the purchase of the additional cooktop will allow more students to apply their learning thus providing more time to cover additional topics and lessons with students in a school year.


From Angles to Architecture: A Geometric Build Project - $1,610
Keeley Lowery, Sam Weeks, Katie Huebsch & Chris Istre - Tyler Legacy High School
Students will design and construct a functional birdhouse applying knowledge of geometric shapes. When constructing the birdhouse, students will calculate the area of each side, angles required to connect each side, and the circumference/diameter of the hole.
Students will design and launch water rockets in order to connect a difficult topic in geometry, trigonometry with a real world application. Trigonometry can be used to calculate a rocket's maximum height by measuring the angle between the observer's line of sight to the rocket at its peak.
Tavern puzzles are mechanical, disentanglement puzzles typically made from metal, consisting of interlocking rings, hooks, or other geometric shapes. The goal is to separate one or more pieces from the puzzle without using force, requiring students to practice perseverance and spatial reasoning.


Play2Learn - Fostering Critical Skills Through eSports - $4,760
David Nguyen & James Bozeman - Tyler Legacy High School
Named Partner: CTCU
This grant will support an educational esports program that develops students' academic and life skills. The program will leverage esports to teach critical thinking, communication, and study skills while offering students the opportunity to compete at both the state (TEXsEF) and national (HSEL) levels.
Funds will be used to purchase gaming consoles and controllers for students to practice and compete, enhancing their learning experience. Students will analyze video-on-demand (VOD) replays to improve study habits and refine strategic thinking. Team-based competition will help develop communication, collaboration, leadership, and decision-making abilities—skills crucial to academic success and personal growth.


Science Lab Materials - $3,250

This grant will fund science lab materials and training to engage students in hands-on, subject based learning in all science classes across the campus.


Tyler ISD Foundation Mission
The Tyler ISD Foundation provides resources to inspire learning, enrich teaching, and enhance opportunities for Tyler ISD students through the support of exemplary programs.
Purpose
The Tyler ISD Foundation is an independent non-profit corporation promoting quality education in the Tyler ISD. The Tyler ISD Foundation was created by the community in 1990 to provide additional support for Tyler teachers, students, staff, administrators, and family members associated with the public school system in Tyler. The work of the Foundation is simple: seek funds to grant those funds in meaningful and impactful ways within Tyler ISD.
