The Hamptons of Tyler senior living residents Thelma Ruth, Minnie, and Agnes spent time reading and uplifting first grade students at Owens Elementary.  It all came together when Media Technology Specialist Tori Dennie reached out to Sara Teichgraeber, The Hamptons activities director, to request a visit to celebrate National Read a Book Day.

National Read a Book Day, which falls on September 6, calls for all book lovers to indulge in their favorite hobby. Bringing new worlds to life, books enlighten us and transport us on exciting adventures. They can challenge our perspectives on human experience in ways unmatched by other media. In a world deluged by technology, National Read a Book Day encourages us to silence the noise and turn the pages for a while.

Both Ms. Dennie and Ms. Teichgraeber recognize intergenerational relationships are beneficial to both the seniors and the students, who enjoyed the interaction. One group even began a sing-along to “Pat-A-Cake” ending in joyful laughter and many photo opportunities to remember this special day.

“We were so thrilled to have this opportunity to spend the morning with the wonderful kids from Owens Elementary,” said Ms. Teichgraeber. “We love our partnership with Owens and look forward to working with them more.”

The joy didn’t end there. Just a few days later, the Owens students gave back. For Grandparents Day, fifteen residents of The Hamptons were honored with gift baskets filled with surprise goodies from the students.
