It seemed like a regular Friday to dress in their favorite college colors, but this Jones Elementary School AVID event was a more significant celebration. Students and staff gathered for a small ceremony campus wide to cheer on the fifth-grade students accepted into the AVID program for middle school. These accomplished students will attend Boulter, Moore, or Three Lakes Middle School. Several guests from the middle schools and families were in attendance for this joyful day in your Hometown District.
About AVID:
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an essential component in moving students toward college readiness. AVID provides support structures for students' success in all classes. As an elective class, AVID targets students in the "academic middle" - B, C, and even D students - who have the desire to attend college and can complete rigorous courses by working hard. Students are taught study skills, note-taking, time management, writing skills, and research skills, while being immersed in a college-going culture.
The class also includes tutoring sessions led by college students and provides support for success in the Pre-Advanced Placement curriculum. Additionally, the class will provide students with access to information about colleges and universities through field trips, guest speakers, tutors, and valuable insight to the college admission process.
