Two Tyler ISD Board Trustees took the oath of office at the regularly scheduled School Board Workshop on Thursday, May 9, 2024. Aaron Martinez, District 5, and Andy Bergfeld, District 7, were sworn in by board secretary Gina Orr.

Aaron Martinez has been a trustee for nine years. When first elected, Martinez said he cared about the education of not only his children, who he said were a motivating factor in his running for election but also the children they are in school with every day. Although his children are now older, his dedication to all students has not changed.

Bergfeld’s current stint on the board goes back to 2012. He also previously served three terms beginning in 2000. In 2005, as President of the Board, Tyler ISD was recognized as School Board of the Year for the State of Texas. For many years, Bergfeld said he is most proud of the trust the district has built within the community.

β€œWe thank each of you, and these two, for your selfless service in an unpaid position. You give up your precious time with your family, and we appreciate that,” Tyler ISD Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford said. Crawford estimated that Martinez has attended more than 300 board meetings, and Bergfeld double that amount, guessing he might even see more than 1,000 before he ends his service. Bergfeld replied, β€œIt would be fun to find out.”

Martinez and Bergfeld ran unopposed. Additional board trustees include President R. Wade Washmon, District 1; Vice President Yvonne Atkins, District 3; Artis Newsome, District 2; Cody Levrets, District 4; and Lindsey Harrison, District 6.
