The Tyler ISD Athletic Department proudly announces their second inductee into the 2024 Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mr. Raymond Davis was recognized during halftime of the Tyler High School vs. Lufkin football game on September 20 at CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium for his outstanding accomplishments on the football field in high school.
Davis, a 1960 graduate of the former Emmett J. Scott High School, excelled on the gridiron for the Bulldogs as an all-district player. He was a multi-season letter winner for the team and rarely lost a district game.
During his senior season, he set a record that is believed to be still standing today. On Halloween night, 1959, during the schoolβs Homecoming game, Davis threw a stunning six touchdown passes against the Texarkana Dunbar Buffaloes in a 48-20 victory. More impressively, he connected with five different teammates for scores, including Alvin Murphy (two), Emmett Hill, Jersey Adams, Quincy Beavers, and Leon Hayter. Those six passing touchdowns are thought to be the most recorded in a single game in the history of Rose Stadium, although no official records have been kept. In 2006, Davis was named to Tyler Paperβs All-Time East Texas team.
Davis was also the first African American starting quarterback in Rose Stadium's history, which opened in 1946.
After high school, Davis joined the military ranks, enlisting in the Air Force. While in the Air Force, he kept active athletically, playing competitive golf, basketball, and semi-professional football.
