Tyler ISD announces the resignation of Chief Danny Brown, who has served the district and the community with distinction as Chief of Police. Chief Brown has been appointed by the Smith County Commissioners Court to serve as Smith County Justice of the Peace for Precinct 5, covering the northern part of the county. Chief Brown’s appointment is effective immediately, and he will fulfill the remainder of the current two-year term in this role.

Chief Brown has led the Tyler ISD Police Department since 2012, overseeing the safety and security of all district campuses, staff, and students. He has been instrumental in ensuring the safety and security of our campuses, students, and staff.

β€œWe are deeply grateful for Chief Brown’s service and dedication to Tyler ISD,” said Dr. Marty Crawford, Superintendent of Tyler ISD. β€œWe are proud to see him continue serving the public in this new capacity. Chief Brown has done an admirable job as Tyler ISD’s Chief of Police for the last nine years. Most recently, he has modernized our police force, which is an immense task, considering Tyler ISD deploys the third largest law enforcement agency in Smith County and one of the top 20 or so largest law-enforcement agencies in East Texas.”

Effective immediately, Deputy Chief of Police Destry Walsworth will step in as Acting Chief of Police. Walsworth, a seasoned law enforcement officer, will serve in this role until the district meets the policy requirements for naming a permanent Chief of Police. Walsworth has been with the district since April of 2023. Prior to that, Walsworth worked 32 years at the Tyler Police Department. While there, he served in several roles, including supervising the major crimes unit, the special investigations unit, financial crimes, and property crimes.

"We have full confidence in Deputy Chief Walsworth’s ability to lead during this transition," added Dr. Crawford. " We look forward to the continued evolvement of protecting and securing our schools that our police, together with our safety and security department, have worked to structure for our students, staff, and families,” added Dr. Crawford.
