National School Lunch Week, taking place from October 14-18, provides an opportunity for Tyler ISD to showcase the incredible efforts of its Food Service Department in serving more than 11,400 lunches daily. One hundred fifty-five dedicated food service employees prepare food every school day. The district is committed to ensuring every student has access to nutritious, balanced meals supporting their health and academic achievement.
The scale of this operation is no small feat. Tyler ISD invests significantly in the well-being of its students. School lunches are free for all elementary and K-8 campus students. Breakfast is free for all students districtwide, serving an average of 6,300 school breakfasts daily. In the first four weeks of this school year alone, the district served 59,000 bags of fresh, individually sliced apples, underscoring its commitment to providing healthy, high-quality meals.
Victor Olivares, Director of Food Services for Tyler ISD, takes great pride in the departmentโs role in student success. โOur food service team goes beyond just serving food,โ Olivares said. โWeโre contributing to the overall well-being of our students and their ability to focus and thrive in the classroom. National School Lunch Week gives us the chance to highlight the importance of what we do and how it directly impacts successful student outcomes. Good nutrition is essential to both physical health and academic performance.โ
National School Lunch Week serves as a reminder of the critical role school meals play in supporting students across the district. As Tyler ISD continues to prioritize the health and well-being of its students, the district invites parents, community members, and the media to join in recognizing the vital work done by its food service team.
