Tyler ISD proudly announces that Dr. Bobby Markle, principal of Caldwell Arts Academy, has been recognized with the prestigious Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership for 2024. This award, presented by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel A. Cardona, honors exemplary school leaders who foster excellence in education and positively impact their school communities.
Dr. Markle has transformed Caldwell Arts Academy into a state and nationally-recognized fine arts magnet school, leading with innovation, vision, and a deep commitment to student success. Under his leadership, Caldwell has become a hub for arts integration and academic excellence, offering students a wide array of creative opportunities while maintaining high academic standards. Model classrooms at Caldwell focus on data-driven instruction and professional development for staff, including prestigious training from organizations such as the Kennedy Center and Focus Five.
Reflecting on this achievement, Dr. Markle stated, βGetting this award alongside our campus National Blue Ribbon Award is a testament to the community that has created a truly special place for students and staff to excel. As leaders, principals are driven by how their work impacts the educational opportunities of our kids, and having people recognize that at a national level is something we only dream of when we start our careers. Truly, thank you to Tyler ISD and Caldwell Arts Academy for letting me develop a shared vision alongside amazing educators. Itβs a story that deserves recognition!β
Since taking on the principal role, Dr. Markle has expanded the arts program at Caldwell, developing nearly 50 different arts courses, including music production, jewelry making, and digital arts. Students are given unique opportunities to showcase their work through a mobile marketplace, participating in local craft fairs and art shows. Dr. Markleβs vision extends beyond the classroom, creating spaces for students to thrive, such as Saturday camps that offer supportive, pressure-free learning environments.
βAt Caldwell, we believe in developing the whole child. We want our students to have a voice in their education and to be empowered to take charge of their learning,β Dr. Markle added. βWeβre not just teaching students; weβre cultivating future leaders.β
In addition to his role at Caldwell, Dr. Markle is dedicated to mentoring other school leaders across Tyler ISD, sharing his expertise in data-driven instruction and school culture. His contributions have not only impacted his campus but have also influenced the broader district community.
Caldwell Arts Academy has consistently earned top ratings from the Texas Education Agency under Dr. Markleβs leadership, moving from a C rating to an A. The school is also a recognized Leader in Me Lighthouse school, with leadership development central to its mission.
βBuilding strong relationships within our community is key,β Dr. Markle noted. βOur studentsβ artwork is visible all over town, from murals to gallery shows. The support we receive from our PTA, parents, and local organizations is incredible and makes Caldwell a true community school.β
Tyler ISD Superintendent Dr. Marty Crawford praised Dr. Markleβs dedication, saying, βDr. Markle has redefined what it means to be a school leader. His innovative approach to arts education and his commitment to academic excellence have created a model for success that is felt far beyond Caldwell.β
