Today at Ramey Elementary School, some of Tyler ISDβs youngest students experienced a lesson in the voting process. Students cast their votes in a unique, campuswide election that put the power of choice in their hands. Through this process, Ramey students not only learned about voting but also experienced how their choices could create real change in their school.
Students in pre-k through fifth grade began preparing for election day during library visits last week, where Media Specialist Jessi Smyth taught them about voter registration, the ballot issues, and how elections work. After each student registered to vote and received a voter registration card, they were responsible for keeping track of their voter card until βelection day,β when they officially cast their votes.
βThe students were excited to learn about the process,β said Smyth. βOnce they had their registration cards, they couldnβt wait to come in and make their voices heard.β
The ballot options offered students the chance to vote on one of four activities that will take place before the end of the school year. Choices included a βStudio/Movie in the Cafeteriaβ experience, a βSchool-Wide Garden,β βMusic During Lunch,β or a visit from a βMystery Reader.β
With results coming in later today, students will soon see the impact of their vote. This hands-on experience has empowered students at Ramey Elementary to see how voting on issues that matter to them can help shape their school and make it a place that reflects their interests and voices.
