five elementary boys and girls holding up voter registration cards for their school

Today at Ramey Elementary School, some of Tyler ISD’s youngest students experienced a lesson in the voting process. Students cast their votes in a unique, campuswide election that put the power of choice in their hands. Through this process, Ramey students not only learned about voting but also experienced how their choices could create real change in their school.

Students in pre-k through fifth grade began preparing for election day during library visits last week, where Media Specialist Jessi Smyth taught them about voter registration, the ballot issues, and how elections work. After each student registered to vote and received a voter registration card, they were responsible for keeping track of their voter card until β€œelection day,” when they officially cast their votes.

β€œThe students were excited to learn about the process,” said Smyth. β€œOnce they had their registration cards, they couldn’t wait to come in and make their voices heard.”

The ballot options offered students the chance to vote on one of four activities that will take place before the end of the school year. Choices included a β€œStudio/Movie in the Cafeteria” experience, a β€œSchool-Wide Garden,” β€œMusic During Lunch,” or a visit from a β€œMystery Reader.”

With results coming in later today, students will soon see the impact of their vote. This hands-on experience has empowered students at Ramey Elementary to see how voting on issues that matter to them can help shape their school and make it a place that reflects their interests and voices.
