Congratulations to Rocio Rico, a student at the Boshears Center for Exceptional Programs, for being named District Secondary Student of the Month.

Rocio's journey is a success story of persistence and adaptive learning. Though non-verbal, her communication abilities have evolved significantly. In past years, she relied on gestures and sign language, but her entrance into the CONNECT program marked a turning point.

Using a Voice Output Device, Rocio has been empowered to communicate more independently, unlocking new opportunities for leadership and connection with those around her. One of Rocio’s most prominent leadership roles is during the morning meeting. She uses her Voice Output Device to direct her classmates, asking them to stand for the pledge and then leading them in reciting it. She also plays a key role in informing the class about the weather, helping everyone prepare for the day.

Her contributions not only aid in daily routines but also showcase her growth in confidence and communication. Rocio’s leadership extends beyond the morning meeting into another exciting new routine: the Mobile Snack Cart. Although this initiative is recent, Rocio quickly took on a leadership role. Introducing herself through her device, she proceeds to offer snacks to different classes, informing her peers of the prices when asked. Her ability to take charge of the Mobile Snack Cart demonstrates her adaptability and willingness to take on new challenges with confidence.

She is also an active participant in Work-Based Learning, where she learns and demonstrates her skills in completing tasks in local community businesses. Her personality and compassion for others shines when she participates in Meals on Wheels. Each week, Rocio helps deliver meals to community members, leaving a lasting impact on those she serves. Her warm smile greets each person, and her kindness shines through when she hands them their meal, signs β€œyou’re welcome,” and uses her device to say goodbye. For the recipients, Rocio has become a special and familiar face, and her presence brings joy to this important community service.

Through each of these experiences, Rocio has demonstrated remarkable leadership, communication skills, and a warm, caring nature. She continues to grow and make a positive impact on her peers and community, showing that her non-verbal nature has never been a barrier to her success.

Congratulations, Rocio!

The Tyler ISD District Students of the Month each receive a certificate and medal, sponsored by CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System.

Each month, Tyler ISD recognizes the exemplary efforts of two students, one from our elementary schools and one from our secondary schools, to be honored. Teachers and school principals submit nominations based on students' excellence in many areas, including academics, leadership, campus, and community involvement. These outstanding qualities lead to successful student outcomes both in and outside of the classroom.
