For the 21-22 school year, Hubbard Middle School is the first campus in Texas to be revalidated with AVID National Demonstration Status; an honor obtained by less than 5% of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) systems across the nation. After completing a rigorous validation process in 2017, Hubbard was named a National AVID Demonstration School for others to model. This week, members of AVIDβs National Validation Team visited Hubbard to assess their schoolwide implementation of the AVID College Readiness System.
National Demonstration status denotes collaborative efforts of the faculty/staff, students/families, and community impact. This revalidation speaks to the intent and impact of schoolwide AVID instructional practices, systems, and culture.
βI am proud of the Hubbard students and staff for renewing our AVID Demonstration School status,β Principal Geoffrey Sherman said. βIt further validates the quality of instruction provided at Hubbard.β
AVID is a college readiness system to assist and mentor students with a strong desire to attend college. Hubbard Middle School exemplifies key characteristics of a quality AVID model for others to replicate.
βAVID helps students create and implement the skills they need to be successful in a college setting,β Tyler ISD AVID Coordinator Lillian Brooks said. βAlthough AVID is taught in an elective course period, its fundamental curriculum, such as writing strategies, critical thinking skills, focused note-taking, organizational skills, and reading strategies is reinforced throughout the day in all subjects.β
At Hubbard, data supports the success of the AVID system and drives the overall campus goals and practices. Increases in overall student attendance, 8th grade Algebra enrollment, and the implementation of small, structured groups for teaching and learning are just a few of the noted successes of the AVID College Readiness System at Hubbard.
