"My 5th grade teacher asked, 'Do you want to be a leader or stay in the background? If you want to show the world how smart you are, you are going to have to speak up.' Those words have stuck with me to this day. I wanted to encourage others that look like me to speak up and take advantage of all the opportunities available that education can provide. As an educator and a leader my goal is to improve the lives of others through service and leave an on-going legacy of achievement." What is the importance of Black History Month? "Black History Month provides a moment to recognize the achievements and success of those who have persevered and shown resiliency in spite of the many challenges faced. In our school community, when our students learn about and see the hard work and great things people right here in our local community have accomplished, you can see their eyes light up with hope and excitement in knowing the possibilities of what they also can do and become if they stay focused and goal driven…Representation really does matter." Out of an extraordinary and extreme abundance of caution for our students and staff, listening to local and national weather predictions for a Winter Storm, power irregularities, and limited but questionable rural bridge conditions, we regretfully make the call to close Tyler ISD schools for the day. We will release school early today by 30 minutes to allow our buses plenty of time to safely transport students home and get our drivers back to the parking lot while it is still light outside and before the next round of precipitation hits our area. Mentoring Alliance after-school programs will still be held on campuses. However, they encourage parents to pick up their children as soon as possible. Please check with your coach or sponsor if you have any extracurricular after-school activities, as practices and games in Tyler will still occur. Thank you so much for your flexibility as we make the best decisions for all our students and staff. #safeTisd

Tyler ISD will have a normal school day as scheduled. As always, our buses will use extreme caution when transporting our students. Please know that we have a plan in place and that some buses may be rerouted to avoid any areas of slight concern. If a delay or closure is needed, you will be informed by 5:15 a.m. through Tyler ISD Facebook, TylerISD.org, the Tyler ISD app, and the parent notification system per our inclement weather procedures. Please know that we drive the roads as early as 4:00 a.m. to ensure the streets are safe. For some students, closing our facilities means they may not have access to a heated and safe environment or hot meals for the day. When deciding to delay or cancel classes, our District leadership team considers the best interests of all Tyler ISD students, families, and staff. #safeTisd
