Students at Jack Elementary School are all about the stitches and making a big impact in the Crochet Club. The Crochet Club is one of many exciting "Sharpen the Saw" (STS) clubs at the school, where staff passionately share their skills and knowledge with students.
The Crochet Club was conceived when teacher Yolanda Peoples was asked to be part of the STS clubs. This program is designed to introduce students to a variety of techniques, skills, crafts, and sports, fostering an environment of creativity and exploration. With approximately 20 clubs in total, the Crochet Club has quickly become a favorite among students.
Currently, ten students are enrolled in the Crochet Club, with varying skill levels from beginners to proficient individuals. The club meets once a month, providing students with opportunities to learn new techniques and create unique projects. Students have learned the basic chain stitch, created beautifully decorated Christmas ornaments, and crafted beaded crochet necklaces. Next, students will venture into using a 12-peg knitting loom to create yarn flowers.
Peoples ensures that each student leaves with a completed project. Crocheting not only hones their artistic skills but also fosters social connections and patience.
One standout student, Trinity Hollie, has demonstrated remarkable progress in her crochet skills. Overcoming initial challenges, Trinity has taken the initiative to learn additional stitches and is currently working on her first blanket.
"I crochet hats all the time, and I had a few hats to give away," said Peoples. "A student saw the hats and asked for one. Then, other students asked for hats. That is how a hat giveaway started.β What began as small acts of kindness has now turned into a hat giveaway, with Peoples having crafted fifteen hats and more in the making.
Peoples shared, "Crocheting hats and the Crochet Club is my way of sharing a craft with the students and showing that I care. A hat, a smile, and a hug really do go a long way."
