Third graders at Caldwell Arts Academy transformed the school gym into Star City, a miniature town filled with businesses built entirely out of large cardboard boxes, as part of an immersive social studies project.

Star City featured various businesses crafted by the students,  including a City Hall, bank, candy shop, cake pop shop, beauty salon, car dealership, bakery, candle store, jewelry store, and even an โ€œAdopt a Dogโ€ center. Students designed, constructed, and operated each establishment, providing them with hands-on learning in citizenship, economics, and community roles.

In an exciting highlight, Star City Mayor Ruby Tomlinson had the honor of exchanging city keys with City of Tyler Councilman Stuart Hene. This ceremonial exchange added an official touch to the student project, allowing students to experience a real-world connection between their city and local government.

โ€œCaldwell believes that students learn better through experiences,โ€ said Dr. Bobby Markle, Principal of Caldwell Arts Academy. โ€œStar City is our annual event in which 3rd graders build their own commerce systems of businesses and services that promote entrepreneurship and civic duty. This exciting project kicks off with a fun Key to the City exchange between Star Cityโ€™s Mayor and the City of Tyler. Then, the students open for business! Education is more than assessments, and this project helps create a new approach to how we lift up student outcomes and experiences."

Students from other grades, staff, parents, and community members enjoyed exploring the Star City businesses, where they had the chance to learn from the young entrepreneurs and purchase goods or services using Star City money issued by the cityโ€™s very own bank.
