Students rotated through lessons surrounding science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
Science- Students played a Jeopardy game with questions about renewable and nonrenewable resources. Students enjoyed the few Christmas trivia questions added to the mix. Science teacher, Ms. Jones, reported students were excited about the game and liked the healthy, friendly competition.
Technology- In Ms. Craft's lesson, students wrote a story about a mosaic snowman they created from their art lesson. Both tasks were centered around the story Snowmen at Christmas by Caralyn Buehner. The class linked technology with writing. After reading the book students came up with ideas of what their snowmen could do at night. They wrote their creative stories using a book creator. Students could add pictures and record their voices reading their pages in our book. Students compiled everything into a digital e-book that will be published and shared with their families.
Engineering- The campus media technology specialist, Mrs. Smith, tasked students with building the tallest, free-standing snowman, only using toothpicks and marshmallows. Students worked with their teams to plan and design their snowmen on paper. They then used their remaining time to build their snowman. In the end, teams measured their snowmen to determine the tallest, free-standing snowman.
Art- In the art lesson, students created a mosaic snowman. Students had to take their time and pay attention to detail to create their art projects from confetti paper. This particular activity was a winter-themed favorite. Students spent time drawing and gluing patterns on tiny pieces of paper to complete a work of art.
Math- Ms. Menard, the math teacher, focused her activity on multi-step word problems; concepts students need additional practice completing. Ms. Menard provided pieces of snowmen with various accessories. Students could only build their snowmen and add accessories as they correctly answered their word problems. Each snowman created was different and unique.
Other fun in the classroom also focused on reviewing topics like renewable and nonrenewable resources, multi-step word problems, and editing and revising compositions.
"My students shared that they love STEAM Day because they could engage in various activities with students not normally in their groups," said Ms. Craft.
