In the Fall of 2023, our Tyler ISD Career & Technology Animal Science program received a complete cow skeleton that was not decomposed enough to bring into the classroom. To address this, we placed the skeleton on a red ant pile, allowing nature to strip it of all soft tissue. Now, one year later, our classes were able to collect the bones. Students had to identify and assemble them in their proper location, aiming to create a complete skeleton. This skeleton will be used in all future Animal Science classes as part of the anatomy and physiology unit. Animal Science instructor, Mrs. Griffin, provided this hands-on, critical thinking component to help students take ownership of their learning. By doing so, the following occurred:
1. Problem Solving
Students had to think creatively about how to decompose the skeleton effectively. Placing it on a red ant pile required them to consider the natural processes involved in decomposition and the role of scavengers in nature.
2. Observation and Analysis
As students collect the remaining bones, they will need to observe differences in the bones and analyze their characteristics. This process encourages them to compare and contrast the various bones, enhancing their observational skills.
3. Identification Skills
Identifying each bone requires students to apply their knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology. They will need to recall what they have learned in class and apply that knowledge to recognize and classify the bones accurately.
4. Collaboration and Communication
Working together to assemble the skeleton fosters teamwork. Students will need to communicate effectively, share ideas, and develop a collective understanding of how to put the skeleton together, which enhances their collaborative skills.
5. Application of Knowledge
This hands-on experience allows students to apply theoretical knowledge from their anatomy and physiology unit to a real-world context. Engaging with the skeleton directly helps solidify their understanding of animal biology.
6. Reflection and Evaluation
After completing the assembly, students can reflect on the process, evaluate what worked well, and discuss what they could improve next time. This reflective practice is vital for developing critical thinking skills
