New Advanced Plumbing Program Launches at Career and Technology Center

Tyler – Starting in the Fall of 2022 Tyler ISD students can now enroll in a new CTE plumbing program.  This program allows them an opportunity to gain training and experience and ultimately a license to begin their career in plumbing right after their high school graduation.

House Bill (HB) 636 passed during the 87th Legislative session.  The bill's text states that a person who goes through the required plumbing classes in a high school's career and technology department may apply for and take an examination for a plumbing license.

Executive Director of College and Career for Tyler ISD Gary Brown testified on behalf of the bill.   He also worked to develop the implementation plan.

"We are thrilled that these future plumbers will be stepping into a high-demand, high-wage career," said Brown.  We will offer four levels of study and classes taught by a Master Plumber."

    • Level 1 - Principles of Construction
    • Level 2 - Plumbing Technology I (beginning Fall 2022)
    • Level 3 - Plumbing Technology II
    • Level 4 - Practicum in Construction Technology – Plumbing

Before the bill passed, the plumbing industry had been heavily regulated, taking eight years for a person to start a plumbing business independently.  Now students can leave Highschool and directly enter the field.
