Tyler ISD’s Hubbard Middle School has a unique team in its science department: a mother-daughter duo inspiring the next generation of scientists. Veteran teacher Rachel Canfield and her daughter, Morgan Modesitt, are not just colleagues—they’re partners in creating hands-on, engaging science lessons for their 7th-grade students.
While Rachel Canfield has spent 31 years in the classroom, Morgan didn’t initially plan to become a teacher. After earning a nursing degree, she realized her passion was in education. Joking with her mom about joining her at Hubbard, Morgan never imagined it would become a reality. In April 2021, an opening for a 7th-grade science teacher presented itself, and Morgan jumped at the chance.
Rachel, who has taught at Hubbard for the last seven years, couldn’t be prouder. “Seeing Morgan step into the classroom has been such a blessing. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and she’s always finding ways to make science fun for the students,” Rachel beams.
As the newly constructed Hubbard Middle School opened this school year, the pair now share a well-equipped science lab. “Before, we had no lab, and we’d squeeze both classes into one room to conduct experiments,” Morgan says. “Now, we have this amazing space designed for collaboration.”
The two complement each other’s teaching styles. Rachel plans weeks ahead, while Morgan adds spontaneous, creative touches. “Mom lays the groundwork, and I bring in the excitement,” Morgan laughs. “We’re a great team.”
One of their most memorable moments came during Halloween when they dressed as Mrs. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus and led their students through a frog dissection. “It was a blast—the kids loved it,” Morgan recalls.
Morgan represents the third generation of educators in their family. Though she once swore she’d never become a teacher, she’s now following in the footsteps of her mother and grandmother. “I never thought I’d end up here, but teaching alongside my mom has been a dream,” she says.
Rachel cherishes the chance to mentor her daughter. “Morgan’s brought fresh energy and ideas to the classroom. She’s doing a fantastic job, and the students benefit from our combined efforts,” Rachel says proudly.
While their teaching styles differ—Rachel is structured, and Morgan is more laid-back—they strike a balance that keeps their students engaged. “We’re always brainstorming new ways to make lessons fun, whether it’s going outside for hands-on activities or turning the classroom into an interactive space,” Morgan says.
Together, Rachel and Morgan are dedicated to making science exciting. From taking students outdoors to observe plant cells under microscopes to transforming their classroom with creative projects, their goal is clear: make learning enjoyable and memorable.
As they continue working side by side, this dynamic mother-daughter duo is proving that teamwork—and a shared passion for teaching—can make all the difference in inspiring young minds.
