As we recognize October as Fentanyl Awareness Month, Tyler ISD reaffirms our commitment to the safety and well-being of our students. While fentanyl abuse has not been identified as a problem within the district, we believe in taking proactive steps to ensure parents, students, and staff are informed and prepared.
Tyler ISD’s goal is to provide a safe learning environment for every student and staff member and to have resources available to support the health and safety of our entire school community. Tyler ISD has implemented the following measures:
Partnerships with Local Authorities: We have partnered with local law enforcement, emergency management, and health authorities to monitor and collaborate on the best way to combat the fentanyl crisis.
Narcan Availability: Narcan, a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of a fentanyl overdose if administered promptly, is stocked at all Tyler ISD campuses. Our school nurses, administrators, and police officers are trained to use Narcan in the event of an emergency.
Educational Efforts: We are dedicated to educating students about the dangers of fentanyl. Our nursing staff, counselors, safety and security team, curriculum leaders, and campus principals work together to provide educational opportunities. These efforts may include assemblies, informational posters, and other outreach efforts designed to raise awareness among students.
Anonymous Reporting Tool: The district offers the Safe2SpeakUP tool, an anonymous reporting tool where students and parents can report any concerns or suspected fentanyl use.
We encourage parents to visit our dedicated fentanyl awareness webpage at https://www.tylerisd.org/page/fentanyl for more information. The webpage provides valuable resources, including signs to watch for in the event of a potential overdose and instructions on responding quickly and effectively.
At Tyler ISD, we prioritize keeping our students safe, healthy, and informed. By partnering with local experts and making resources readily available, we aim to foster a safe environment for learning and growth.
