Tyler Legacy High School held an AP Capstone Diploma Ceremony in the media center to honor students in their third year of the program. Students received a certificate of completion and their silver stole from Principal Geoffrey Sherman. In total, seven seniors and one junior achieved the honor.
AP Capstone is a diploma program from the College Board. It is based on two year-long AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. AP Seminar is a course where students investigate real-world issues from various academic perspectives. The course teaches students to read, think, write, research, and present at the college level.
After students have completed Seminar, if they decide they want more, they are allowed to take AP Research.
AP Research is a year-long course where students cultivate the skills and discipline necessary for independent research. In this course, students develop research questions and projects based on their interests. They must design their research methods, conduct that research, detail their process and findings in a 5,000-word academic paper, and defend their thesis in a 20-minute oral presentation.
Students who successfully pass both AP Seminar and AP Research receive an AP Capstone Certificate. A student who successfully completes both Seminar and Research and passes four additional AP Exams will receive the highly sought after AP Capstone Diploma; one of only a few advanced high-school diplomas offered worldwide.
