Tyler Legacy High School recently had the exhilarating opportunity to participate in the Junior Achievement (JA) Stock Market Challenge held at Tyler Junior College. This event brought the classroom to life for these high school students, allowing them to apply their knowledge gained from the JA Take Stock in Your Future curriculum to the dynamic world of stock trading.
The JA Stock Market Challenge is an engaging and fast-paced simulation that immerses students in a fictional marketplace, designed to mirror the real stock market. Juniors and seniors created teams of 2-4 students to compete at Tyler Junior College this week.
During this simulation, students are given a virtual $1,000,000 to invest in fictitious stocks. The challenge unfolds over a series of 60-second trading days, reflecting the unpredictability of real stock markets. Teams compete to build the most substantial portfolio while navigating the complexities of investing, trading, and strategy. They also receive news releases and hot stock tips to inform their decisions.
"It was a really neat thing for high school students to be able to participate in... I liked the way that it was set up where we weren't relying on teachers or adults, but we could rely on each other to learn and work as a team," says first-time participant and Tyler Legacy student, Madeleine Singley.
The JA Stock Market Challenge at Tyler Junior College is an exceptional educational experience that combines the excitement of a stock trading floor with the practicalities of financial decision-making. It allows students to explore the world of finance, test their investment skills, and gain insights into the ever-changing landscape of the stock market. It's an invaluable opportunity for students to apply what they've learned in the classroom to the real world, preparing them for a future where financial literacy is an essential skill.
At the end of the simulation awards for the top 3 earning teams were announced. Tyler Legacy placed 2nd place by team Mariners: Kenzie Cash, Jesieldi Flores, Henry Dewberrym and Marisha Huber.
"All props and credit go to Mrs. Morrow in helping prepare my team and me for our success," says team leader Kenzie Cash when asked about her strategy to win. Tyler Legacy High School's Dean of Instruction, Kala Morrow served as sponsor in preparing student groups for the Stock Market Challenge. They met three times to go over terms, strategies, and other tips about the stock market.
Tyler Legacy was also awarded 3rd place for the Dodgers: Christian Lemons, Elijah Tippett, and Matthew Reese.
