On December 10th we held a dedication ceremony for the Tyler High Theatre. The theatre was dedicated to Dr. Martin L. Edwards, Jr.
Dr. Martin L. Edwards, Jr. was a former Tyler ISD Board
member and community physician. In 1969, he was the first African American elected to the Tyler ISD Board of Trustees, where he remained until 1987. Dr. Edwards served as board president from 1974-1975 and as Vice President from 1977-1978.
Dr. Edwards served the Board as a statesman, where he
professionally governed the transition of Tyler ISD schools during integration. Dr. Edwardsβ services ensured all children would have the same educational opportunities across the city and throughout the school system.
