Many of you are looking to take college courses or want to know if you are prepared for college courses. The state of Texas has a test called the Texas Success Initiative Assessment, or TSIA, that measures your readiness to take on college-level coursework. Tyler High School offers these test weekly, but you must sign up with Ms. Welch. You can find Ms. Welch C126.

Below are a few frequently asked questions bout the Texas Success Initiative Assessment. You can also check with your school counselor to clarify any information below.

What is the Texas Success Initiative Assessment? - The TSIA is a series of placement tests for students enrolling in public colleges and universities in Texas.

Why is the TSIA important? - The tests help determine whether you're ready for college-level courses in the areas of reading, writing, and math.

Is the TSIA required? - The TSIA assessment is required in Texas unless you are EXEMPT. The most common exemptions are based on coursework, SAT, ACT, or STAAR EOC scores. If you believe you qualify for an exemption, check with the college/university you are applying to for an approved list of exemptions. ***Most colleges and universities require TSIA results and/or proof of exemption before being allowed to register for classes.***

What do my TSIA scores mean? - The TSIA is not a pass/fail test. The scores are used for college placement purposes.

Do my scores matter? - Yes, the TSIA scores are a valuable tool to help accurately place you in Math and/or English/Reading classes to ensure you have the level of support you need to be successful.

What happens if I do not pass the TSIA? - You cannot pass or fail the TSIA. Based on how you perform, you may either enroll in college levels courses that match your skill level or college readiness courses or interventions to improve your skills and prepare you for success in college-level courses.

What are the minimum placement scores for each of the TSIA sections? - English: 945, Essay: 5, and Math: 950

Should I study for the TSIA? - It is highly recommended that you prepare for the TSIA so the assessment accurately reflects your placement in reading, writing, English, and mathematics.

How long does the TSIA take? - The TSIA is not a timed test. The average time to complete all 3 sections of the test is 3-5 hours.

How many times can I take the TSIA? - You can take any individual subject/section of the TSIA as many times as you want.

Where can I take the TSIA? - The TSIA can be taken at your high school (free) or your local community college/university testing center (fees may apply)
