High School Students at Wayne D. Boshears Center recently had the opportunity to learn about the Filipino tradition of Flores de Mayo, thanks to a cultural exchange activity led by special education teacher Mayca Odon. The celebration, which takes place every May, honors the Virgin Mary with flower offerings and features processions where girls wear traditional white Filipiniana gowns.
Mrs. Odon shared the significance of this cherished tradition with her students, explaining its cultural and spiritual importance. To make the experience interactive and inclusive, she designed an art activity where students created colorful flowers using paint and their palms to stamp designs onto paper.
The hands-on activity allowed students to express their creativity while engaging with the tradition in a meaningful way. The classroom buzzed with excitement as vibrant flower designs came to life, reflecting the spirit of Flores de Mayo.
The celebration not only introduced students to a beautiful cultural practice but also fostered a deeper appreciation for diversity. Through this creative approach, students gained a greater understanding of Filipino heritage while enjoying an immersive and fun learning experience.
The event underscored the importance of cultural exchange in education, providing students with an opportunity to connect with traditions from around the world in a way that was both accessible and enriching.
