Isabel Garcia awarded Teacher of the Year from Brooke Parker

My first experience with a special education student was when I was in middle school. There was a student with special needs in one of my classes. The teacher would ask for a volunteer to help the student out during class and walk with them to their bus. I was one of the few that would always volunteer, I enjoyed working and helping that student out. From there I knew I wanted to work with special needs students and make a difference in their lives.

I attended Tyler Junior College and graduated with my associate. I received my Bachelor of Science in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in special education teaching from Stephen F. Austin State University.

This is my 4th year as a teacher, I have worked for Tyler ISD since 2012. I started as a paraprofessional while I went through school. All my years with Tyler ISD, have been in special education. I was a resource paraprofessional traveling between schools and assisting students with their learning needs. Some of the schools that I had the pleasure to work in were Griffin, T.J Austin, and Peete Elementary.

I transferred to Boshears Center after learning about the school. I fell in love after seeing our population of students and touring the school. I knew right away that this was where I belonged. Throughout the years at Boshears Center, I have been in many different classrooms. I started in Transition which is now CONNECT from there I did elementary and high school as a paraprofessional. As a teacher, I have taught in Middle school and high school where I am currently at.

I have learned so much, being at Boshears working with the students, seeing their growth and their major accomplishments, inspires me each day. Itโ€™s rewarding to know I have been able to reach them and help them on their way to future independence.

I appreciate the opportunity to share the many achievements of my years in special education.  Thank you for the nomination!

Sincerely,

Isabel Garcia
