It's official! After this morning's Birdwell tradition, La Raspa (dance), Hispanic Heritage month is in full swing!  Students dressed in authentic Hispanic attire and lined the hallways to celebrate the start of Hispanic Heritage month by dancing.  Staff decorated the hallways with flowers and papel picado as well as representations of Hispanic culture from around the world.

La Raspa is said to have begun in Eastern Mexico in Veracruz. With shipments of trade goods in the port city, also came music and dance from around the world. Modern Mexican folk dances, like La Raspa, are combinations of Aztec, Mayan, Yaqui, African and European movements.

Students also prepared for the Rose City Fiesta in Bergfeld Park.  Third graders rehearsed using colorful scarves and salsa moves with Miss Vargas.  They will perform at 6:30 tomorrow, September 16.

With the kickoff of Hispanic Heritage Month, students at Birdwell Dual Language Immersion School will participate in many activities over the next month including dress up days, guest readers, students versus staff soccer games, crafts, and the book fair.
