Yesterday, excitement filled Mrs. Fallad’s 1st-grade classroom at Birdwell Dual Language Immersion School as students cast their votes after an engaging reading and activity based on the popular book Pato para Presidente (Duck for President).

The lesson began with a read-aloud of Pato para Presidente, a book that introduces children to the election process through a humorous story of a duck running for president. Following the reading, Mrs. Fallad encouraged her students to make predictions about the story's outcome, discussing each character’s strengths and appeal. Students then compared and contrasted the two main candidates, considering qualities such as honesty, responsibility, and leadership.

Once each student understood the characters and their platforms, they participated in a class election, casting their votes in a mock ballot. The classroom was buzzing with excitement as students lined up to vote for their preferred candidate, eager to take part in this hands-on experience.

Mrs. Fallad plans to count the votes, with the official winner to be announced today. This interactive lesson not only introduced the students to democratic processes but also sparked conversations about what makes a good leader.
