measuring a book on a balance beam

Last week, Birdwellโ€™s 5th-grade students transformed into teachers and leaders, hosting an exciting science camp for their 4th-grade peers. This innovative event brought the properties of matter to life through interactive presentations and engaging hands-on activities.

The camp covered fundamental concepts, including density, volume, the use of a triple beam balance, magnetism, conductors, insulators, and circuits. Each topic was introduced by a 5th-grade student who not only explained the science behind the concept but also guided the younger students in activities designed to deepen their understanding.

Safety and the proper use of scientific tools were also major focuses of the camp, equipping 4th graders with foundational skills they will use in their own experiments next year. From measuring objects with a triple beam balance to exploring the properties of circuits, the camp provided a dynamic and memorable introduction to the world of science.

โ€œIt was so fun to learn from the 5th graders,โ€ said a 4th-grade student. โ€œI liked the circuit activity the best because we got to make a light bulb turn on!โ€

The event not only sparked curiosity about science but also fostered leadership and collaboration among the 5th graders. The young mentors took pride in their role, inspiring the next generation of learners.

Birdwell celebrates the success of this unique event and the teamwork that made it possible. Great job to all our 5th-grade leaders for sharing their passion for science!
