Birdwell Dual Language Immersion School is proud to announce it has been awarded a significant grant through the โ€œBirdwell Elementary School Fund at East Texas Communities Foundation.โ€ The funding, in the amount of $24, 895.00, will be used to install a new state-of-the-art audio system in the schoolโ€™s historic auditorium, an integral part of the original 1948 building.

This enhancement will breathe new life into the space, improving its functionality for school events, performances, and community gatherings. Principal Mina Naranjo shared her excitement: โ€œThis project is long overdue. Birdwell is a school of choice and our students are both bilingual and biliterate and this gives them an opportunity to showcase their culture and talent with others in the community.โ€

Named after Dr. A.W. Birdwell, a distinguished Smith County educator and the first president of Stephen F. Austin State University, Birdwell Elementary School has a proud tradition of fostering educational excellence. Dr. Birdwellโ€™s legacy, rooted in growth and progress, aligns perfectly with this project, which combines preservation with innovation.

The upgraded audio system will enhance bilingual performances, assemblies, and presentations, supporting Birdwellโ€™s mission of preparing students for success in a multicultural world. There is more to be done still and the second and third phases involve upgrading video equipment and lighting. The school is seeking sponsors who would like to be part of the next phases in making the Birdwell auditorium a successful part of our school and community.

The school extends heartfelt thanks to the East Texas Communities Foundation for their generous support and investment in the Birdwell community. This project ensures the spirit of Dr. Birdwellโ€™s visionโ€”stimulating growth and excellenceโ€”remains central to the schoolโ€™s future.
